Dry Messy Play

I've been trying to integrate messy play with Tommy.  He wants nothing to do with it, he either runs the other way or makes a crinkled up face and says "ick."  We've had success with rice, so I thought we'd try something new.  I received a package in the mail with some of those styrofoam packing peanuts; so I tried to get him to just touch one and he wouldn't then I put a couple on the toy he wanted and he changed his mind about the toy. ;)  Long story short I gave up on those for awhile.  Today we tried shredded paper.  He touched it and that's about all.  Later today, I brought out some wrappers from these bars the boys eat for breakfast (we've been collecting them to recycle) I dumped them out on the floor to condense and he was all into it.  Maybe it was the colors or texture or familiarness of the wrappers but it kept him intrigued.  I'd say it was a form of messy play, they were defiantly not in any order scattered on the floor!
